In 1965 the Silver Age of comics was in total swing, with all of DC's iconic heroes starring in their ain titles as well as in the the Justice League.

1 element that DC mostly lacked at the fourth dimension was the youthful energy of Marvel'south Argent Age titles, which included hip young heroes like Spider-Man and The 10-Men aslope more than iconic DC analogs like The Avengers or Thor. It wasn't that they lacked for immature characters. It seemed the every DC hero had a teen version of sidekick. They  hadn't been assembled all in ane place.Teen Titans by George Perez

That changed with The Brave and The Bold (1955) #54 in 1964, which combined Gilded Age creation Robin (Dick Grayson) with the more than recently-made sidekicks of Kid Wink (Wally West), and Aqualad. Their adjacent appearance in effect #60 added a formalized version of Wonder Girl (Donna Troy) and gave the grouping a name – "The Teen Titans."

After just one more anthology series appearance (in Showcase (1956) #59), the Teen Titans graduated into their ain title in 1966. While many other teen heroes appeared, only one became a more permanent member – Speedy, Green Arrow's sidekick. The team-upwards was revived in 1973 and so shuttered in 1978 as the heroes felt they were growing too old to be "teens."

Marv Wolfman and George Pérez reawakened the franchise in 1980. In an astounding act of creation, they introduced team mainstays Cyborg, Starfire, and Raven in a preview story in DC Comics Presents (1978) #26, where they besides reintroduced Animal Male child as "Changeling."

Wolfman and Pérez would go synonymous with the Teen Titans for the next decade in the same style Chris Claremont was with the X-Men, who the Titans rivaled in popularity. Forth the style the co-writers introduced Slade Wilson as Deathstroke and inverse Dick Grayson to Nightwing. Their characters made it throughÂCrisis on Space Earths relatively unscathed as DC chose not to rock the boat of their almost-popular team franchise.

In 1988, the teens graduated to merely being referred to as "Titans." While that separate in the title continues to recur through the present day, there aren't hard lines around which heroes are "Teens" and which aren't, aside from Nightwing. Starfire, once engaged to Nightwing, continues to announced in both iterations of the group interchangeably. This is complicated by the popularity of the Teen Titans in other media like cartoons, where the team tends to exist anchored by a 1980-inspired lineup of Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, and Animal Boy.

In 1998, a relaunch ofÂTitans yielded a third title for the franchise -ÂImmature Justice.ÂWhile the team name hasn't been reused since 2003, DC sometimes refers to their unabridged line of youthful, sub-Justice League heroes by that championship.

The New Teen Titans by Wolfman & Pérez (1980 – 1985)

The New Teen Titans (1980) #1

The Titans keep a two-and-a-half-year publishing hiatus after Teen Titans (1966) #53 in 1978. Their break ends when the Teen Titans are reassembled past Raven and relaunched by the writing squad of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez in The New Teen Titans (1980)Â[CBDB] in the latter one-half of 1980. Information technology is later accompanied past a four-issue mini-serial, Tales of the New Teen Titans, in 1982.

Now comes the tricky office.

The New Teen Titans (1980) changes its proper name toÂTales of the Teen Titans (1984) [CBDB] with issue #41 to brand way for a second, simultaneous volume of The New Teen Titans 1984 – likewise written by Wolfman and Pérez. The renamedÂTales of the Teen Titans (1984) continues for another year and a one-half through issue #58 in October 1985, which is role of the lead-upward toÂCrisis on Infinite Earths. Starting with #59, the title features only reprinted stories.

Meanwhile, the newly-launchedÂThe New Teen Titans (1984)Âcontinues past Crunch on Space Earths (which hits information technology in issues #xiii-14) through issue #49 in November 1988 with Wolfman still at the helm before irresolute its title toÂThe New TitansÂ(1988). That will be covered in the next section.

Generally, the Teen Titans do not experience manyÂinitial changes due to Crunch on Infinite Earths, though Donna Troy undergoes changes in the longer term due to the revision to Wonder Adult female'due south origin.

The New Teen Titans (Drug Awareness Specials) (1983)

Three unique drug awareness issues titled Plague!, Battle!, and Problem Kid, which are not reprinted at this time.

Post-Crisis Teen Titans (1984 – 1998)

The title of this section is somewhat misleading. Allow me to explain.

First,ÂCrisis on Infinite Earths did not have a major direct impact on the Titans, salve for ane character – Wonder Girl, Donna Troy. While Nightwing and Speedy also had ties to existing franchises that experienced changes inÂCrisis, neither were as comprehensive as the retcons to Wonder Woman's origin. The New Teen Titans (1984) #1

Every bit a consequence of that, usingÂCrisis every bit a dividing line for the Teen Titans isn't as effective as it is for other DC titles and heroes. This is further complicated by there beingÂtwoÂTeen Titans ongoings running at the aforementioned time whenÂCrisisÂarrived.

Tales of the New Teen Titans (1984) ends with the lead-up toÂCrisis in issue #58 – which places it entirely in the prior period. The relaunchedÂThe New Teen Titans (1984) is published in parallel toÂCrisis every bit early equally issue #7, though it does not officially necktie in until issues #13-14. And, it keeps runningÂpast Crisis – which inappreciably whatever DC series did bated from Batman and Superman series in the hundreds of issues.

As a result, I somewhat arbitrarily considerÂTales of the New Teen Titans (1984) to exist the Pre-Crisis Titans series and The New Teen Titans (1984) to be the Post-Crisis Titans series.

In 1988 DC was finishing the final moving ridge of Mail service-Crisis relaunches, and The New Teen Titans (1984) changed its proper noun toÂThe New Titans (1988) and continued its run until 1996! Forth the way, a pair of supporting serial come and go – Teen Titans Spotlight (1986) and Team Titans (1992).

And so, in 1996, DC relaunches Teen Titans (1996) for two years before transforming the franchise in 1998.

The New Teen Titans (1984) #1-49 & Almanac ane-4 (Aug 1984 – Nov 1988)

The original The New Teen Titans (1980) inverse its title to Tales of the Teen Titans (1984) with upshot #41 to make way for this serial, The New Teen Titans (1984) [CBDB], launched by Wolfman & Perez. It changed its proper noun to The New Titans (1988) with issue #50 in 1988 – covered in another department, below.
